Price: $995 for lifetime license; $50/month lease; free version with standard features
Product: Trading and analysis software
System requirements: Windows XP (SP3 required)/2003/Vista/7 or 8; minimum screen resolution of 1024x768; minimum P4 processor or higher; 2GB RAM; Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (preinstalled on most PCs or can be downloaded)
A full-featured trading platform thats free: Thats the reason behind the success of NinjaTrader. NinjaTrader (NT) was started in 2003 with a handful of people and now has 40 employees. Since the program is free, it attracts a lot of users, and as a consequence, also attracts a large number of third-party product vendors. How does NT make its money? It does so predominantly by selling the lifetime license version and monthly subscription licenses. The difference between the lifetime version and the free one is that the lifetime version lets you trade directly with your broker using a NinjaTrader interface. If you get a free version of the program from your broker, it is likely to be missing the ATM (Advanced Trade Management) feature; thus, not all free versions of it are the same.
What type of trader would be willing to pay $995 to have a brokerage interface built into the software? He or she will likely be a daytrader. Otherwise, a trader who holds positions for two or more days can easily place orders through a separate brokerage interface.
